Sun Moon Lake

Sun Moon Lake is situated in Nantou County’s Yuchih Township and is the largest lake in Taiwan. Its crystalline, emerald green waters reflect the hills and mountains which rise on all sides. Its natural beauty is enhanced by numerous cultural and historical sites. In 2006, Sun Moon Lake hosted more than 3 million visitors!

The Lake is named so as the Eastern side is circular like the sun and the Western side resembles a crescent moon. Sunrise is definitely the best time to see the beauty of the Lake. In the middle of the Lake is Lalu Island which holds significance to the local Aboriginal people.

President Chiang Kai Shek, who dates back to the 1950s, loved to visit Sun Moon Lake. It was his favourite holiday spot and today you can still see where his fishing boat was last moored. A specialty dish, ‘The Sun Moon Lake President Fish,’ has even been named after him which you can try at the Lalu Hotel.

There are plenty of sights to be seen at Sun Moon Lake including the Chapel of Christ- President Chiang Kai Shek’s very own private church.

A short stroll to downtown Shuieshe is where you will find many street vendors selling all sorts of interesting food like battered whitebait and deep fried mushrooms.

There is so much to explore at Sun Moon Lake and at the main arena in Shuieshe, chartered boats take visitors on short or full day tours of Sun Moon Lake, a great way to explore all the sights.

The central location of Sun Moon Lake also means that the bountiful tourism opportunities available in Nantou Counyy are only a short drive away. The area draws tourists from all over the county and its unique attractions are increasingly a magnet for international visitors.
