Road to Port Hedland
The road from Karijini to Port Hedland is a five hour drive and is full of scenic attractions along the way. The Hamersley Ranges stretches for more than 400km through the Pilbara and creates a wild and scenic landscape. At its eastern end, the Ranges join Opthalmia Dam which Neville and Trevor visited while in Newman. Western Australia’s highest point, Mount Meharry, is situated in the ranges, standing at 1,249m. Some of the world’s oldest rock formations can be found in the Hamersley Gorges, with most of Australia’s iron produced from the Hamersley Ranges. The Fortesque River houses some of the most magnificent gorges such as the Dales gorge which dates back 2000 million years. These gorges can be up to 100 metres deep and are a rainbow of colours that changes in the sunlight. The width of the river varies, sometime measuring as little as one metre to large crystal pools large enough to swim in, which makes it a fabulous spot to stop along the drive for a refreshing dip.
Munjina Gorge is a spectacular gorge to stop at. The highway goes through the middle of the gorge and it is well worth pulling over to take in the view of these glorious rocks. The East Munjina Gorge lookout is located 2km east of the highway.
